Applicants are expected to clearly articulate their research topics in the application by submitting a concise and well-structured research proposal. Thesis topics investigate more specific issues within individual or combined research areas, and do not necessarily correspond to individual academic disciplines. Instead, they are often interdisciplinary in nature, involving faculty and resources from other graduate schools at Harvard and contribute to expanding the intellectual range of design research. The GSD offers a dynamic setting for the exchange of ideas across the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, real estate, design studies, and design engineering—united in the pursuit of a more just, coherent, and beautiful world. Our world faces increasingly complex, often unpredictable dilemmas of consequence to human lives and living environments, including rapid urbanization, climate change, and resource scarcity. The MDE program prepares innovators who operate both creatively and analytically, think strategically, and collaborate broadly.

Research and publications

The Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) is the graduate school of design at Harvard University, a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It offers master's and doctoral programs in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, real estate,[1] design engineering, and design studies. Research topics are proposed during admission and are decided upon entry into the program. Student research should align with current faculty research interests, allowing for affiliations with faculty and, possibly, the research labs.

As of 2016, the program's ten-year average ranking places it first, overall, on DesignIntelligence's ranking of programs accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Distinct from research in the sciences or humanities, design pedagogy involves highly interactive ways of thinking and learning that directly engage the technical, material, spatial, ecological, political, economic, and planetary dimensions of cultural life. Ultimately, MDes at the GSD challenges conventional ways of learning, and achieves a scope and diversity that are unmatched by any other design school in the world. The Harvard Graduate School of Design does not discriminate against applicants or students on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry or any other protected classification. The Graduate School of Design educates leaders in design, research, and scholarship to make a resilient, just, and beautiful world.

We also encourage you to explore the GSD through student work and the pages below to learn more about our degree programs, application requirements, student life, and financial aid. The Master in Design Studies (MDes) post professional program at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design is aimed at those who want to pair their design knowledge with tools to enable careers in public service, academia, NGOs, innovative ventures, as well as developing specific expertise for design practice. The Ecologies Domain investigates relationships among changing environments, varied forms and traditions of human settlement, and the material, infrastructural, and ecological networks required to sustain life.

At a public meeting Wednesday night in Cambridge, state officials presented proposals for the parkland and shoreline that will open up following the realignment, including filling in the riverbank to varying degrees or constructing a boardwalk or sea wall, and different ways of managing stormwater runoff. This issue examines multihyphenation as a mode of creative practice, a political response, and an economic imperative in our 21st century neoliberal world. Our world’s increasingly complex problems demand a deep understanding of underlying problem architecture, the capacity to imagine bold futures, and the ability to build and test prototypes geared toward maximum impact. The Master in Design Engineering (MDE) program prepares a new generation of leaders to create transformative solutions that address societal grand challenges.

The DDes program is highly regarded internationally, and DDes alumni have become thought leaders in their respective fields. Their work promotes and advances improvements of the built and the natural environment worldwide. They hold prestigious positions in private practice, industry, government and academia. The design disciplines are critical to engaging the most urgent and complex conditions of our time, and the Master in Design Studies program at the GSD prepares students to rise to the challenge, with training that is at once foundational, multitudinous, and incisive. While priority will be given to students with a design background, MDes is broadly welcoming of students from a wide range of educational backgrounds and life experiences, and deliberate in mobilizing the full intellectual capacity of the GSD in support of MDes students’ ambitions. With more than 50 issues in print, Harvard Design Magazine probes beyond the reaches of the established design disciplines to enrich and challenge current discourse.

This work designs the optical system of SHOT to obtain a large FOV of up to 1.5 deg and match the detector with the size of 60 mm × 60 mm and pixel pitch of 0.8 mm. By adding a corrector lens to the optical system and optimization, the aberrations mainly caused by the optical elements in the detector system are reduced. The influence of each component assigned to different terahertz materials is analyzed. Like many other participants, Jennifer Pieszak, a member of Community Rowing, saw room for improvement in the project. Cole D. Rainey-Slavick, a Somerville resident, said the state’s lack of interest in cutting lanes clashed with their climate goals and professed commitments to reducing car-dependency across Massachusetts. As it stands now, the realignment would bring 12 lanes of traffic across the turnpike and Soldiers Field Road down to ground level.

In 1937, Walter Gropius joined the GSD faculty as chair of the Department of Architecture and brought modern designers, including Marcel Breuer to help revamp the curriculum. These and other problems demand a deep and systems-level understanding of the underlying problem architecture, which in turn enables innovative, multi-faceted solutions that transcend disciplines and scales. The Doctor of Design (D.Des.) program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design is a leading doctoral degree program for professionals who wish to conduct rigorous, intensive design research. The program is geared towards applied research that advances design related knowledge in a broad range of scales from product design to buildings and landscapes to urban design and regional planning. Accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board and open to students with an undergraduate degree, the two-year professional Master in Urban Planning (M.U.P.) degree program engages with critical issues facing cities and regions in coming decades.

Drawing on the strengths of the department, school, and university, GSD planning students learn how to understand, analyze, and influence the variety of forces—social, economic, cultural, legal, political, ecological, and aesthetic, among others—shaping the built environment. The issue features curator Antwaun Sargent in conversation with artists Rick Lowe and Amanda Williams, as well as interviews by the guest editors with fashion designer Casey Cadwallader of Mugler, artist Farah Al Qasimi, and Felix Burrichter, founder and creative director of PIN–UP magazine. An essay by artist Irena Haiduk on the Third Way and Yugoslav fashion designer Aleksandar Joksimović is accompanied by never before published drawings by the designer. Architect Andrew Witt and artist collective Metahaven consider the future of artificial intelligence in design in a pair of essays. The issue concludes with a series of dispatches from curators and editors from around the world, including Edward Enninful, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Sumayya Vally, Carson Chan, Tosin Oshinowo, Jan Boelen, Nora Razian, Aric Chen, Shirley Surya, Fredi Fischli, and Niels Olsen.

The America Issue of Harvard Design Magazine, featuring a new design and art direction by Alexis Mark, invites historians, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, theorists, curators, artists, and planners to reflect on the country’s past and present, and to imagine sustainable futures. Projects, taxonomies, dialogues, essays, and spatial interpretations explore possible Americas. They allow us to delve into issues relevant to small cities, towns, and rural areas—as well as major urban centers—and to study barriers and opportunities facing communities across the country. As a post-professional studio-based program, the Master of Architecture in Urban Design (M.A.U.D.) combines intense design instruction, extensive applied research, and knowledge of urban history and theory.

Together with partner Sharon Johnston, Mark served as Co-Artistic Director for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The Graduate School of Design is home to several degree programs, including the world’s oldest landscape architecture program and North America’s longest-standing urban planning program. Keep in mind that you can combine almost any two master’s programs to earn concurrent degrees. The three major design professions (architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture) were officially united in 1936 to form the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Joseph F. Hudnut (1886–1968) was an American architect scholar and professor who was the first dean.

Still, many advocates pressed the state to reduce the number of lanes on the road to make room for alternative modes of transit — though the state has largely resisted the idea so far. “There’s nothing like a deadline to concentrate the effort,” said Tom Nally, planning director at A Better City, a local business association. Upcycling — the creation of new products by reusing one or more components from ones — is having a moment. Before coming to the GSD, Ed Bayes (MDE ’22) studied law and anthropology and worked in law and public policy in the UK, where he advised the Treasury and the mayor of London on tech, business, and climate policy. Taking advantage of the remarkable international makeup of the faculty and student body, the M.A.U.D. program establishes a common intellectual ground among architects who have a strong interest in engaging the practice and theory of contemporary urbanism. “A terrible mechanism [is] on the march, its gears multiplying.” So begins the 48th issue of Harvard Design Magazine, guest edited by Mark Lee, chair of the department of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Florencia Rodriguez, editorial director of –Ness Magazine. The issue takes as its theme the slippery and ambiguous figure of “America,” seen through the lens of the built and unbuilt environment.

Americanization—once the “terrible mechanism” bent on pressing capitalist values on emerging economies everywhere—is now in retreat, eclipsed by the more urgent domestic concerns of pandemic and climate change, racial injustice and domestic radicalization. Applicants select one of four domains of study—Ecologies, Narratives, Publics, and Mediums—and undertake a core set of courses, including research methods and related topical courses. Following that domain foundation, each student then forges an individualized trajectory, leveraging course offerings across the GSD, as well as other schools and departments at Harvard. During their fourth semester, MDes students from all four domains come together to focus on collaborative advanced research in the form of open projects, in which their expertise finds application on a current issue.

Then in 1981, the then City and Regional Planning Program under John Kain ceased at the Graduate School of Design and was dispersed to the Kennedy School of Government and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In 1984, the Department of Urban Planning and Design was formed under Dean Gerald M. McCue with the inclusion of the Urban Design Program. Then in 1994, the Urban Planning program was officially returned to the Graduate School of Design under the aegis of Albert Carnesale, the Dean of the Kennedy School of Government, and Peter G. Rowe, the Dean of the Faculty of Design; with the first class entering in academic year 1994–1995. In 2021, the Department of Urban Planning and Design assumed responsibility for a third graduate degree, the Master in Real Estate[10] (MRE). Students enrolled in the GSD’s professional programs in Landscape Architecture are also encouraged to apply for a concurrent Urban Design degree, for which an individual curriculum may be arranged.

Common to the diverse range of DDes research investigations is the belief that design research makes essential contributions to understanding, analyzing and ultimately improving the built environment in our increasingly complex world. In 1900, the first urban planning courses were taught at Harvard University, and by 1909, urban planning courses taught by James Sturgis Pray were added to Harvard's design curriculum as part of the then School of Landscape Architecture. In 1923, a specialization in urban planning was established under the degree program of Master in Landscape Architecture. In 1929, North America's first urban planning degree (at the graduate level) was established at Harvard under short-term funding from the Rockefeller Foundation.

WHY CUSTOM LIDS?

Most popular are Velcro, sliding buckle, deluxe locking brass buckle or plastic snap (used on truck caps most often). Fitted style and Flexfit style caps have no closure style on the back nor do they have the hole in the back. Available in printed, embroidered, PVC, leather, woven, chenille & bullion. Elastic in the band of the cap allows for one size fits most. Before he could hand Alvarez the jacket, Baez had to come up with the design first. Not only would it be the first piece to represent the new brand, but if it was good enough, it could give his brand the spotlight it needed.

Country House Plan with a Wraparound Porch

If you’ve always wanted a small country house to call your own, this might be the home plan for you. Wooden porch pillars and a single-gabled roof contribute to the country appeal of this design. When you walk through the entrance, you’ll find a very open floor plan which includes a living room, dining area, and kitchen with easy access to the rear patio. Country house plans are those specifically designed to be built out on rural land. They are akin to farmhouses and typically include large front and rear porches and simple rooflines adorned with gables and/or dormers.

The kitchen comes with a large island for extra storage, and offers easy access to the dining area. There is space for two bedrooms, or one bedroom and a flex room/den/office in one wing of the layout (explore these home office ideas from Real Simple). This farmhouse style home plan was designed to give you lots of ways to incorporate more indoor/outdoor time (much like these outdoor rooms from HGTV).

These homes may have multiple levels, with bedrooms and living spaces situated on different floors, creating a sense of privacy and separation between an lower or upper level master bedroom and other bedrooms. These porches are often used as outdoor living spaces, where families can gather to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Many country homes also feature outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and other amenities that make these spaces even more inviting. In addition to the many classic and historical designs, California also includes many contemporary homes. These houses can vary noticeably in appearance, though many focus on simple exteriors incorporating a wide range of building materials. Available in both one-story and two-story layouts, these homes bring modern design elements into play by increasing the flow between rooms and incorporating numerous windows.

Multi-pane windows and ornate shutters add further charm to the exterior and contribute to the true Americana coziness country style home designs offer. At Direct From The Designers, we've brought together the most popular country home plans from leading architects and designers throughout the US and Canada to help you find the perfect country home plan. Country house plans reflect the best of rural living, with broad sweeping floor plans and expansive verandas that embrace their setting.

Small country house plans are known for their incorporation of outdoor space, such as wraparound porches and wide verandas. If you love the country style--and want to add a little outdoor time to your everyday living-- but are looking for a house plan that’s smaller and stylish, we have some options for you. Many country style house plans also incorporate large, open living spaces, which create a sense of community and togetherness for families and guests.

If you're not interested in country house plans with wrap-around porches, there is usually at least some covered front porch and/or rear covered or screened porch as well. These exterior elements make country house plans easily recognizable, as do the use of overhead window dormers, gabled rooflines, and abundant window views. Adding some outdoor living space promotes casual living by highlighting the indoor/outdoor living space as a seamless design element that provides a welcoming place for all to gather. The appeal and comfort of a Country house plan makes this a natural choice for relaxing year-round living.

As you walk in through the spacious front porch you’ll be greeted by an open great room (with vaulted ceiling) and a generous kitchen and eating area. The other wing contains a master suite complete with a modern bathroom that boasts a walk-in shower and two sinks. Unlike these architectural styles, country houses were simple structures often with symmetrical lines, a central door and evenly spaced windows. Many country floor plans featured wide front porches that were sometimes decorated with Victorian style spindle work and brackets or Colonial style shutters and dormers.

Small Country Farmhouse with Front and Rear Porches

The other wing of the house has two secondary bedrooms that are split by a full bathroom for privacy. As the country grew and became more prosperous, country homes became more ornate and elegant. By the late 19th century, wealthy families were building grand country estates that were designed to showcase their wealth and status. Kit homes, such as those offered by various manufacturers like Sears, Aladdin, Gordon Van Tine, and dozens more, were designed for affordability. The materials were often top-notch, and nearly 100 years later many of these small, old houses are eagerly sought after. The second floor boasts a very private master suite (with a generous walk-in closet space and a luxurious bathroom).

What to Look for in Country Home Designs

Our country house plans include all the charming details you'd expect with inviting front and wrap-around porches, dormer windows, quaint shutters and gabled rooflines. Once mostly popular in the South, country style homes are now built all over the country. The modernized country home plan is more energy efficient, has an open living area, kitchen island eating bar, breakfast nook, split bedroom design and often a well-organized mudroom. A nostalgic, furnished front porch with millwork detail is the hallmark for this style home making it warm and inviting.

We’re now beginning to offer editable CAD files as well!

The history of country homes dates back to the early days of the United States, when settlers were building homes in rural areas. These homes were often constructed using local materials such as wood and stone, and were designed to be simple and practical. While combining modern and country design aesthetics might seem contradictory, the two can work together well. The modern master suite includes a vaulted ceiling over the bedroom, a walk-in closet, and a bathroom with a soaking tub and glass shower.

Regardless of origin, these plans provided fodder for the dream of home ownership to hundreds of thousands of Americans. Built for a comfortable and family-friendly lifestyle, country house plans feature layouts that are highlighted with plenty of space to enjoy gathering with family and friends, even in a single-story layout. One-story plans can be sprawling and often incorporate large, well-laid-out rooms which are well-suited to a casual way of life in the home's interior. This stylish country home plan offers a substantial amount of space for its size.

This may include front porches or rear porches decorated with simple wooden columns or railings, adding to the home's sense of simplicity and functionality. Unlike many other styles of architecture, country homes are often designed with a focus on functionality and practicality. This means that they are typically smaller and more efficient than other types of homes, while still offering plenty of space for families to live and grow. One of the most notable features of country homes is their use of natural materials. These homes are often constructed with wood, stone, and other materials that blend in with the natural surroundings.

This small country house plan has a welcoming front porch that invites you to spend some time relaxing outdoors. As you pass through the entryway, you’ll be greeted by the spacious living room that provides plenty of space for a dining table and chairs. The conveniently located kitchen makes it easy to prepare meals inside and enjoy them outside on the rear porch. The first floor contains two rooms--one a spacious bedroom with a walk-in closet, and the other ideal for a den/office/or study room.

Tools for finding a sunny site and building a solar-efficient home

These homes are smaller in size and carry over many of the aesthetics of Craftsman homes, only on a more stripped-down scale. These houses often feature offset porches, simple front lawns, and a single story that spreads out the rooms to maximize space. The rear covered porch is ideal for enjoying time outside with family and friends, and the two-car carport can accommodate vehicles or provide additional storage space.

The large garage is ideal for convenient vehicle storage or for extra work space. The open layout of the great room and the kitchen (with a walk-in pantry) creates a generous sense of space, and leads you directly to the substantial rear porch. Country homes also often feature large, covered wraparound porches, which provide a welcoming entrance to the home and a space to enjoy the outdoors.

The living room features a cathedral ceiling, creating a sense of even more open space. The kitchen is located just behind the living area and has a helpful island bar and easy access to the dining room. The rear covered porch is ideal for outdoor grilling and entertaining with friends and family. This appealing small country home plan is perfect if you’re looking to add a little charm to your home design. As you pass through the foyer you’ll enter into the great room (that includes a vaulted ceiling) and features rustic wooden beams for additional country appeal.

country house plans

Whether it's a primary residence in a suburban environment or a vacation home hidden in the rural countryside, country style houses are the architectural embodiment of the American Dream. Any homeowner can appreciate the traditional wraparound porch, Palladian window, and dormers--all which make the exterior distinctive and visually interesting. Once you’re on the inside, you’ll find a spacious great room--complete with a fireplace, cathedral ceiling, and clerestory windows-- that flows effortlessly to the back deck. The kitchen is conveniently located in between the dining room and breakfast area (that includes a view of the rear deck), and boasts a pass-through for easy food service into the great room. Open layouts give you the chance to really increase that feeling of extra space, and with a smaller country house plan, they work exceedingly well! When you come through the entry, you’ll find yourself in the midst of a large and welcoming great room.

The 6 Best Cruises for Northern Lights Viewing

northern lights from cruise ship in alaska

The arctic viewing season for northern lights cruises is from late September to late March/early April, though the best months are December through March, when there are the longest hours of darkness and many clear night skies. Generally, skies are clearest near the spring and fall equinoxes in later September and March. Some late September/early October Alaska cruises can include northern lights sightings as well. Yes, you can witness the Northern Lights from a cruise ship during dedicated Northern Lights cruises with Aurora Expeditions. These cruises navigate to prime viewing locations near the Arctic Circle, offering passengers a unique vantage point to experience the dazzling spectacle of the Aurora Borealis. The expedition vessels are strategically positioned in areas with minimal light pollution, maximizing the chances of observing the vibrant colours and dancing lights of the Northern Lights against the Arctic night sky.

What Ports Do You Visit on a Northern Lights Cruise?

Cunard is known for bringing aboard subject experts, astronomers, and night-sky photographers who add extra color and insights to the sky-transforming glory of the Northern Lights. There will be ample space on the 1,085-foot, 13-deck ship to find quiet areas to see the nighttime show. From there, it’s onward to Rørvik, an ancient fishing town, and then Lødingen, a village known for its place amongst the fjords. Then the ship continues north into the Arctic Circle and up to Alta. There, guests can take an excursion to visit a Sámi village and learn about the Indigenous and semi-nomadic reindeer herders. Then it’s back down to Tromsø, where guests can visit the Polar Museum, go snowshoeing, or try one of the world’s northernmost breweries, Mack Bryggeri.

The Best Time to See the Northern Lights on an Alaska Cruise

You’ll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you’ll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities. There, guests spend their days scanning the dizzying cliff sides for puffins, guillemots, and razorbills, and their nights scanning the sky for signs of the aurora. The ship then crosses the Arctic Circle as it heads to Greenland, where it spends seven days patrolling the remote northeast coast.

Northern Lights Cruise: How to See the Stunning Natural Phenomenon

During the winter, clear dark skies and aurora activity make Juneau an ideal spot to witness the stunning northern lights display. The northern lights, or aurora borealis, aren’t predictable, but they are more likely to display during high solar activity cycles. The sun alternates between a high activity cycle and low activity cycle every eleven years or so. Watch the Kp-index, an aurora activity indicator to find out when conditions are ideal. Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver.

northern lights from cruise ship in alaska

The lights are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in locations on the so-called auroral oval, a ring zone over the polar regions. In cruising terms, that means prime viewing is in northern Alaska (which is easily accessible on cruisetours), Norway, Iceland, Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland. No cruise can guarantee sightings as the aurora is a natural and unpredictable phenomenon. However, cruises specifically tailored for aurora viewing will optimize the chances by choosing routes and timings with historically higher success rates. While the aurora is a spectacle for all ages, consider the late-night hours and colder temperatures. Some cruise lines offer kid-friendly programs and activities to engage younger travelers during the trip.

Specialized Northern Lights Cruises vs. Regular Cruises

If you want to take an epic cruise, Uncruise Adventures can take you there. While you want to bring short and long sleeves, bring more long sleeves than short ones, especially if you visit Alaska in late September. Make sure folks clearly understand how off-the techno grid the trip is.

No matter your itinerary, UnCruise helps guests witness incredible creatures in their natural habitats, creating memories that will last a lifetime. 👆 The possible aurora activity level at the end of October, according to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. And then… I also had an Alaska cruise on a Norwegian cruise ship at the end of October.

Look Up Into Norway's Night Sky

This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Northern Lights tours don’t focus on one spot or location. The Northern Lights are most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. The Aurora Borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. To take northern lights pictures on your phone, you’ll want to go into your camera settings and choose night mode.

Some venture to the Svalbard Archipelago, where the Gulf Stream flows prevent the seas from freezing in winter. The best time to see the northern lights in Iceland is as deep into winter as you can go. Late December and early January are best because they're the darkest times of the year, but the northern lights can appear as early as September or as late as March. Another option might be to stay in Alaska after your cruise, at which point you can follow the instructions above and drive as far north as you can. Our Northern Lights cruise sticks to the aurora zone in the Arctic Circle, but seeing the lights dance is only one part of your Northern Lights adventure.

These diverse activities create a holistic and enriching journey for travellers seeking the magic of the Northern Lights. Popular regions for Northern Lights cruises and expeditions with Aurora Expeditions include Arctic destinations like Norway, Iceland and the Canadian Arctic. These Arctic regions, located near the magnetic poles, offer optimal conditions for observing the Northern Lights. Aurora Expeditions carefully plans itineraries to position their vessels in prime locations, away from light pollution, providing passengers with the best chances of witnessing the spectacular light display. Enrichment is an important component of our expeditions – we hope that you will leave changed and become lifelong ambassadors for the natural world and the wild, important destinations we visit. Your world-class Expedition Team will be on hand to answer your questions about the aurora borealis and how it comes to appear in the night sky, Arctic wildlife, geological formations and the history of the places we visit.

Announcements (even opt-in late night wake-up calls) may be issued when there’s an opportunity to view the northern lights from your ship. Excursions may give you the opportunity to be transported to northern lights viewing spots by everything from buses and minivans to small boats and dogsleds. The best northern lights cruises provide plenty of opportunities for passengers to learn about, celebrate and, of course, see the northern lights. But there will also be activities geared to exploring parts of the world filled with many other natural, cultural, and man-made wonders.

If the lights appear during the night, the crew will play an announcement over the in-cabin TVs (meaning guests need to leave their TVs on all night to hear it). During sightings, staff circulates trays of hot beverages, like cocoa and toddies, to help guests stay warm on deck. Viking runs the itinerary multiple times from January through March in 2025 and 2026. Quark Expeditions’ Northern Lights–themed sailings begin and end in Iceland, where sightings of the dancing aurora borealis are common in winter.

As far as cruises go, Alaska cruises in September is a good pick because the nights are long and dark. Norwegian Cruise Line’s six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you’ll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher’s kennel. There’s no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon — when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky — is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

The ship will offer seven new suite categories and new premium aft suites, a new wellness program, and a new comfort food menu for in-room dining. This new cruise ship features an LNG power system that reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%. Its advanced onboard wastewater treatment system ensures that no water leaves the ship without undergoing strict treatments that reduce pollution and harm to local ecosystems. Smart energy efforts have also been applied to the ship’s waste elimination, climate control and ventilation. For the first time ever for Oceania, the ship will offer a new category of concierge-level staterooms that are designed with solo travelers in mind.

As for decor and amenities, Oceania has promised an "evolution" of the intimate, residential-style interior venues for which its ships are known. At 67,000 tons, Vista will be a tad bigger than Oceania's last two new ships, Marina and Riviera. However, it'll carry fewer passengers (1,200 versus 1,250), meaning its "space ratio" of space per passenger will be higher. MSC’s gorgeous MSC Yacht Club is proof that not all luxury suite complexes are created equal. This private enclave boasts all the requisite perks you might expect, from lavish suites to grand lounges and private dining areas. MSC sets itself apart by making that complex more accessible than ever before, thanks to the line’s value-priced MSC Yacht Club Inside Staterooms that provide a lot of luxe for a little dough. At around 215,863 tons, MSC World Europa is about 4% to 8% smaller than the five Oasis-class ships. MSC World Europa is 21 decks high — three decks higher than the Oasis-class vessels. Because a large percentage of the new cruise ships arriving in 2023 belong to an existing class and therefore have a familiar look, cruise fans might not find this year's new arrivals to be as exciting as last year's debuts. Those four vessels — MSC World Europa, Explora 1, Vista and Silver Nova — are the four new cruise ships for 2023 that have us the most excited here at TPG. However, they're not the only major new cruise vessels arriving during the next 12 months. It's just one of two major new cruise ships arriving in 2023 that has a tie-in to MSC Cruises.

Icon of the Seas was originally expected to debut at the end of 2023, but now the ship will begin sailing from Miami, Florida, on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries in January 2024. This ship will no doubt already be sailing before that, including a transatlantic journey.

The line has a second new ship, the 4,810-passenger MSC Euribia, too, which will debut later in 2023 — in June, if all goes according to plan. At around 182,000 tons, it won't be quite as big as MSC World Europa but will still be one of the biggest cruise vessels in the world. Like the Oasis-class ships, it's able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762, to be exact. Note that in some cases, the new ships coming in 2023 will arrive months behind schedule due to ongoing pandemic-related construction delays at the shipyards that are building them. Thanks to these delays, the first sailings of a few ships that were expected to debut in 2023 — including Royal Caribbean's much-awaited Icon of the Seas — have been pushed to 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

MSC Euribia is named after the Greek goddess, Eurybia, who harnessed the winds and weather to master the seas. Celebrity goes for a more serene feel on its ships, so you won’t find any water slides or rock climbing walls on the Ascent, but there will be plenty of theaters and shows. On the super-luxe Silver Nova, the restaurant S.A.L.T. will focus on culinary education and local food culture. Welcome to ultimate luxury—a Regent Suite on the forthcoming Seven Seas Grandeur. Norwegian Viva will be a big ship but with more intimate touches like the fine Italian dining venue Onda by Scarpetta (pictured in the rendering). Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays.

She’s the first ship in the world to use advanced hybrid technology, which means there will be zero harmful emissions while the ship is in port, leading the way in eco-friendly cruising. There are a selection of dining venues, including some that offer speciality dishes based on the region that the ship is sailing. But it’s Viking’s commitment to enrichment that will take the fore – expect fascinating talks to be held by the cruise line’s resident historians, as well as cookery classes, wine tastings and more. The recently renewed Swan Hellenic brand will add to its current fleet of two new ships with yet another.

The 922-passenger Explora I is the debut ship of Explora Journeys, an all-new luxury cruise line owned by MSC Group, the Geneva-based shipping container giant that also owns MSC Cruises. On a ship that’s big by luxury standards, guests will stay in oceanfront suites, penthouses, or residences, lounge around four pools, and choose from 18 food and beverage options. Unusual activities and entertainment examples will include music master classes and a monthly full-moon party. The ship debuts in northern Europe in July, with five sister ships scheduled to join it by 2029. Other planned features include more than 27,000 square feet of outdoor deck space, four pools and nine restaurants. Like many of the cruise ships we’re looking forward to in 2023, Explora I pays close attention to new cruising technology and eco-friendly designs.

Like the last new Edge-class ship, the 8-month-old Celebrity Beyond, it'll be a stretched version of the two initial ships in the series (Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex), being both 20 meters longer and a deck taller. After an initial transatlantic voyage from Barcelona to Miami, Seven Seas Grandeur will operate Caribbean sailings out of Miami for the winter before returning to Europe for the summer of 2024. Fares start at $4,439 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing out of Miami. Norwegian Viva will initially sail in the Mediterranean before repositioning to the Caribbean for the winter of 2023. Fares start at $849 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing out of Miami.

In fact, the first sailing sold out in less than 24 hours, a history-making event for Royal Caribbean. Featuring what will be the largest water park at sea, the Icon will have six record-breaking slides. With a length of 735 feet, and 750 passengers and 542 crew, the Grandeur has one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry. Regent is an all-inclusive cruise line, which means that drinks, dining, WiFi and shore excursions are included in your fare.

The ship also includes more than 40 new and returning dining, bar, and nightlife options, and cutting-edge entertainment. Among the favorites are the cruise line’s thrilling dive shows and ice skating shows, each enhanced with immersive features and stunning special effects. The ship will offer 75 GRT per passenger, making it one of the most spacious cruise ships in the world in terms of space afforded to each passenger. Designed with the yachting lifestyle in mind, Explora I offers just over 450 balcony suites, with each boasting 377 square feet of space. As the cruise industry continues to grow and evolve, the delivery of new cruise ships in 2023 is highly anticipated.

The two earlier vessels in the series are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ships currently afloat, and they are also bigger than all but 11 other cruise vessels in the world. Perhaps the most notable new cruise ship of 2023 will be MSC World Europa, the first of a new series of megaships from MSC Cruises that is designed to go head-to-head with Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class ships. The third of a series of newbuilds for Regent, Seven Seas Grandeur will likely try to top the title of "world's most luxurious cruise ship," which the line dubbed sister ship Silver Seas Explorer when it debuted. Coming in November 2023, Seven Seas Grandeur will have its version of the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite, and the line is already stating that the ship will have the highest space and crew ratio per passenger in the industry. The first ship in the luxury Silversea fleet to have all balconies, Silver Nova will debut in summer 2023.
